Junior Watson has achieved cult status among blues aficionados for creating one of the most unique guitar voices to come along in years. Besides his formidable mastery of many blues genres and swing, he often adds his own creative improvisations. Junior cites influences as diverse as Tiny Grimes, Oscar Moore, Bill Jennings, Rene Hall, Robert Jr. Lockwood, Jimmy Rogers, Eddie Taylor, Guitar Slim and Earl Hooker. In addition to his mastery of blues and swing he often adds his own cartoon-like twist to everything he plays. You never know what he will do, and when asked, he doesn't know himself. His energy and playing give you a feeling of reckless abandonment. As he was once quoted, he plays "like a train off the tracks."
A founding member of The Mighty Flyers, Watson remained with Rod Piazza for ten years. He left to join Canned Heat for a decade, after which he toured with LA-based harmonica player/vocalist Lynwood Slim. He has played and recorded with a who's-who of the blues, including Big Mama Thornton, George “Harmonica” Smith, Lowell Fulson, Pee Wee Crayton, Jimmy Rogers, Shakey Jake, Luther Tucker, Charlie Musselwhite, James Harman, Kim Wilson Snooky Pryor and William Clark. With The Hollywood Blue Flames you can hear Watson’s brilliant guitar virtuosity and wide creative scope. Hold onto your hat. And your socks.
